Alarmed Percent of
Hungered Hondurans
A total of 2.6 million
Hondurans are suffering
hunger in the country,
representing 37 percent
of the Honduran
population, and children
are the most affected,
as revealed by an
evaluation of the United
Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization
Saturday.
FAO said that the
departments of Santa
Barbara, Lempira, Copan,
Intibuca and La Paz are
the most affected by
hunger.
FAO and humanitarian
organizations
investigations warned
about retarded growth in
children, one of the
highest nutritional
risks.
Around 360,000 children
of 5 years old are
suffering a retarded
growth, which
corresponds to a
national standard rate
of 29.2 percent.
In children from 6 to 9,
prevalence is 52
percent, according to
the latest national
census, and the rural
population is the one
with the hihgest risk,
said FAO.
The malnutrition rate
hardly went lower than
22 percent in a period
corresponding to
1990-1992, and went to
21 percent during 2002
and 2003, which is still
