Panamanians Support
Torrijos
President Martin
Torrijos is supported by
59 percent of
Panamanians, according
to a survey published by
the firm Dichter y Neira
on Sunday.
After three years in
power, Torrijos is
strongly supported,
although his popularity
has dropped from 67.2
percent, according to a
similar poll carried out
by the same firm in
August 2006.
The survey showed that
27.3 percent of
Panamanians think the
president's work is bad,
and 9.9 percent said it
was very bad.
Commenting on the
survey, the newspaper La
Prensa said on Sunday
that the pessimistic
vision of Torrijos's
performance might result
from the way the
government handled
several incidents with
the people.
The newspaper mentioned
the beatings that the
guardians of the
Presidential Palace gave
to the victims and
relatives of people
poisoned by drugs
produced at state-owned
laboratories, alleged
interference in trade
unions and the deaths of
two workers.
Other negative incidents
were the disclosure of
luxury cells for jailed
drug traffickers,
increasing gang-related
violence and roadblocks
due to constant social
and trade union
