Taxi Fare Increase To Be
Decided Following Public
Hearings
The public hearing to
increase taxi rates
begins tomorrow as the
Autoridad Reguladora de
los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
listens to a peition by
the Federación Nacional
de Cooperativas de Taxi
(Fenacotaxi) to increase
taxi rates by 8%.
The increase does not
have any major
objections, except for
one complaint which
triggered the public
hearing process which
will continue until next
Monday in areas of the
country.
According to the
schedule set out by the
Aresep, the public
hearings begin tomorrow
in San José, Tuesday in
Cartago and Pérez
Zeledón, Wednesday in
Puntarenas and Heredia,
Thursday in Liberia,
Friday Cuidad Quesada
(San Carlos) and Monday
in Limón.
The increase request is
based on rising fuel
costs, the exchange rate
of colones to dollars
and the increase in
salaries and the
accumulated inflation
between August 2006 and
May 2007.
Although the taxi
drivers are asking for
an 8% hike in fares, the
last word will be from
Aresep head Fernando
Herrero, following the
public audiences.
If approved, the new
rates would be as
