Police at Vienna's airport arrested a suspected Costa Rican drug smuggler who allegedly swallowed 143 packets of cocaine, officials said Friday.

Police said an X-ray of the suspect, identified only as a 26-year-old man, revealed the packets, which they said contained a total of about 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of cocaine.

Investigators said the man had flown from San Jose, Costa Rica, to Paris and from the French capital to Vienna, where he reportedly told authorities he was to have been paid €1,500 (US$2,000) to deliver the drugs.

The suspect remained in police custody Friday, officials said.
