Best Fill Your Tank
Today, Gasoline Prices
Up At Midnight
The price of gasoline is
going up ¢32 colones per
litre at the stroke of
midnight tonight, the
Autoridad Reguladora de
los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
informed yesterday.
The increase will at
¢1.440 colones to the
cost of filling a 45
litre tank of gasoline.
The cost to fill a 45
litre tank (average tank
size) with super
gasoline will cost you
tomorrow ¢27.900 colones
instead of the ¢26.460
today, while to fill
with regular will be
¢26.280 up from ¢24.840.
The price per litre at
the pumps will from ¢588
to ¢620 for super; from
¢552 to ¢584 for
regular; and from ¢392
to ¢424 for diesel.
The increase as approved
earlier last week by the
government regulator
from a request by the
Refinadora Costarricense
de Petróleo (Recope)
saying tha the cost of
crude oil on
international markets is
pushing up the price of
gasoline at home.
There has been no price
increase since last May
when the Sala IV or
Constitutional Court
froze the automatic
adjustment formula used
by Recope saying that it
was unconsitutional and
forcing the Aresep to
hold public hearings for
each request.
The Sala IV, in its
judgement, said that the
automatic formula did
not allow the consumer
to voice their opinion
on the increases.
This new increase was
approved following a
public hearing.
Notwithstanding, brace
for another increase in
the coming week, as the
central government
issued a decree to allow
for a tax increase for
each litre of gasoline
sold. The increase, when
it goes into effect
after approval by the
Aresep and published in
the official government
publication will
increase the tax on
gasoline by ¢4 colones a
litre on super, ¢3.75
colones on regular and
¢2.25 colones on diesel.
When the increase goes
into effect, the tax on
gasoline will stand at
¢160.75 colones per
litre on super, ¢153.75
colones per litre on
regular and ¢90.5
colones per litre on
diesel.
The tax increase is
based on the law "Ley de
Simplificación
Tributaria" which allows
Hacienda (Revenue
ministry) an increase
every three months based
on inflation.
