Nicaraguan President on
a Crusade against Hunger
We cannot relax or be
happy as long as we have
families in poverty in
Nicaragua, said
President Daniel Ortega
as he presented over 300
productive bonds in
northern Nicaragua.
The ceremony, held in
the Condega
municipality, 145 miles
north of Managua, on
Saturday night, was part
of the Zero Hunger
program started by the
Sandinista Government in
May.
Each productive bond,
worth $2,000, includes a
cow and a pig, both
pregnant, as well as
poultry, seeds, farming
implements and other
inputs, so that every
household is able to
produce their own food.
In his speech, Ortega
reiterated the
apolitical nature of the
$150-million Zero Hunger
program, aimed to
benefit 75,000
Nicaraguan families in
the next five years. |
