Guatemalan Congress
Approves CICIG
Guatemala Congress
approved creation of the
urgently needed
International Commission
against Impunity CICIG,
by an absolute majority
Wednesday.
The agreement was
reached with 110 votes
in favor after a debate
that took several hours.
The members of FRG
(Guatemalan Republican
Front) of former
dictator Efrain Rios
Montt, who opposed the
commission, immediately
abandoned Congress once
results were announced.
The Commission,
established by agreement
between the United
Nations and the
government, would have
legal authority to
collect public and
private data on
organized crime and
groups of illegal power.
Its results would be
given to the Public
Ministry to press
charges against those
responsible. |
