Nicaragua Ready To Dialogue With
Costa Rica
Nicaraguan president, Daniel
Ortega said he was willing to
preliminarily meet with his
Costa Rican counterpart and
neighbor, Oscar Arias.
"We have to talk but before we
must agree on the subjects that
are our interests," the
president said in a press
conference.
Ortega added that, in addition
to studying the future of the
thousands of Nicaraguan
immigrants in Costa Rica, he is
interested in analyzing free
transit along the common border.
He also expressed interest in
Costa Rica joining Central
American integration, although
Costa Rica has expressed no
interest in that idea.
The Sandinista leader explained
that the San Juan river is not
an issue of debate since it
belongs to Nicaragua.
The Nicaraguan president further
added that he does not agree
with a proposal of Costa Rica
for United Nations experts to
set sea limits between them in
the Pacific. This conflict of
interests was highlighted when
the Nicaraguan Navy captured a
Costa Rican vessel for allegedly
violating its jurisdictional
waters.
International experts cannot
come to set borders, Ortega
insisted, who again warned that
bilateral agreements between
Costa Rica and Colombia and
those of Bogotá with Honduras
threaten Nicaraguan sovereignty.
Managua has trials pending in
The Hague court against these
three countries regarding
territorial issues.
