NAM Praises Admin of Panama
Channel
Panama President Martin Torrijos
expressed appreciation Wednesday
for the recognition by the Non
Aligned Movement Summit,
recently held in Cuba, of the
efficient administration of his
country´s canal.
At the 61st UN General Assembly,
Torrijos highlighted that the
NAM heads of state and
government also supported the
Panamanian initiative to
increase the present capacity of
that important seaway, and
referred to the referendum on
canal extension to be held
October 22.
For Panamanians, the historic
and emotional duty of the canal
makes its extension the only
possible decision by the
Legislature and the Executive,
which should be ratified through
a referendum, Torrijos remarked.
The sea route, through which
five percent of the world´s
maritime commerce moves, has
been managed by Panama for seven
years, after a lengthy and
complex negotiation that ended
US administration.
Since then Panama has
efficiently directed the channel
and will now prove if it is
ready to extend it, to increase
its capacity, said the
president.
