Mexican President Breaks with
Tradition
Mexico´s President Vicente Fox
will give the “Shout of
Independence” on September 15 in
Dolores Hidalgo, in Guanajuato,
and not at the National Palace
in Constitution Plaza as
planned.
Just a few hours before the
traditional ceremony, Government
Secretary Carlos Abascal
explained the change was made
for the good of the nation and
to preserve security and peace
in the capital, as well as for
social harmony and to strengthen
the democratic values of Mexico.
According to custom, at 11 PM on
September 15, the president of
the Republic stands on the
central balcony of the National
Palace and gives the shout of
Miguel Hidalgo in 1810: “Long
Live National Independence! Long
Live Mexico!”
The hundreds of thousands of
Mexicans objecting to the
handling of the recent election
called on opposition leader
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador –AMLO-
to also hold a festivity in the
Plaza, where the peaceful civil
resistance began.
Thousands of AMLO sympathizers
are preparing for this and the
traditional military parade on
September 16, for which they
removed the tents set up for 45
days in the plazas and central
avenues of the Federal District.
