Venezuela foresees "favorable"
outcome for UN seat vote
Venezuela's ambassador to the
United Nations said on Saturday
that a "favorable" outcome would
emerge from the voting next
Tuesday for a non-permanent seat
on the UN Security Council.
Francisco Arias Cardenas said in
a government statement that the
outcome of next week's voting
"already is favorable" for
Venezuela and was "generating
great expectations for those who
believe in UN reform."
But he did not say whether
Venezuela had managed to
convince more nations to vote
for Venezuela or Bolivia, the
compromise candidate Caracas has
proposed.
Venezuela and U.S.-backed rival
Guatemala have been contesting
the seat in 41 ballots, which
have failed to produce a winner,
and both countries refused to
withdraw their candidacy.
Guatemala has led Venezuela in
all but one of the previous
votes, but none of them mustered
the needed two-thirds support in
the 192-member UN General
Assembly.
