Transport Strike in Uruguay
Over 20,000 truck owners and
drivers, and nearly 5,000 taxi
drivers began an indefinite
strike Monday demanding reduced
fuel prices, union leaders
announced.
The strikers analyzed proposals
by the transportation ministry
on Sunday, but decided "to hold
the strike for indefinite time,"
though some alternatives can be
still negotiated.
The 22 transport trade unions
nationwide issued a release
sustaining "the Executive s
offers are not enough."
This is the first time the
government of Tabare Vazquez is
faced with such a situation
since he assumed the presidency
16 months ago.
Diego Valverde, president of the
Professional Cargo
Transportation Union, said they
will once again negotiate with
the government next week, but
the strike will remain
inflexible.
With the initiative, over 20,000
heavy vehicles will be stopped
nationwide, affecting
innumerable activities and
causing millions in economic
losses.
