Italian Fugitive Deported
Not all fugitives deported from
Costa Rica are from the United
States.
The Dirección General de
Migración y Extranjeria
(immigration service) yesterday
deported an Italian national who
was convicted in Italy to 30
years prison for drug
trafficking.
The Italian had been living in
Costa Rica for the last 10 years
in the area of Malpais on the
Pacific Coast and was detained
by immigration officials because
his legal status was in
question.
While investigating his legal
status, the immigration service
learned of the conviction and
decided to deport him, not
requiring any extradition
proceedings, because the man is
deemed to be in the country
illegally. Immigration officials
were clear to point out that he
is not beind deported because of
the Italian warrant and will be
going to Spain, because what was
his point of origin when he
landed in Costa Rica.
Costa Rican authorities say the
man is tied to drug trafficking
and the Italian mafia.
The man, whose identity was not
released to the press, was
deported last night on an Air
Madrid flight that has regular
direct service between Costa
Rica and Spain.
