E-Mail Virus Alert
If you are one of hundreds,
perhaps hundreds of thousand who
has received an email with an
attachment that confirms your
order, careful not to open it.
The latest email circulating
comes from
[email protected],
or at least that is the email on
the header.
The email thanks the customer
for placing their order, in this
case an order for a Sony VIAO
SZ370 computer for the purchase
price of $2.482.87.
The message continues to tell
the customer that if the order
is paid by credit card, the
charge would appear in the name
of the shop (no mention of the
shop name is made) and that the
email is to confirm the order.
The message seems
straightforward enough. However,
there is a catch for the curious
and this is where the virus can
do damage to your computer.
The message asks you open a
"zip" file that contains a
summary of the order in PDF
format, a format used by Adobe
Acrobat Reader, which is an
legit program and free for
download.
A "zip" file is a compressed
archive of files to save space.
The virus file is contained in
one of the files in the "zipped"
archive and will invade you
computer if opened.
Despite Racsa's - the state
owned internet service provider
- to catch virus and spam
emails, this type of email looks
and feels like a real order
confirmation and since the virus
file is hidden in the "zip" it
cannot be detected.
Don't fall victim to this type
of email by not opening any file
that you think is suspicious and
unsolicited and especially
containing an attachment.
