Argentina seeks Gorbachev's help
over dispute with Uruguay
Argentina is considering asking
for former Soviet leader Mikhail
Gorbachev's help to resolve its
dispute with Uruguay over the
planned construction of two
paper mills on the Uruguay
River, local media reported on
Sunday.
Gorbachev, the 1990 Nobel Peace
Prize laureate, leads a
foundation named after him which
aims to tackle major worldwide
problems, including nuclear arms
and environmental protection.
Argentina hoped that he could
mediate with Finland, the home
of Botnia, a company that wants
to build one of the paper mills
on the Uruguay River, which
forms the border between the two
countries.
Two weeks ago, the World Bank
agreed to lend Botnia the money
to complete its plant, saying
the plant would not cause any
environmental problem.
Buenos Aires has been
challenging the construction of
the paper mills in the
International Courts of Justice
in The Hague, citing
environmental damage to the
Uruguay River.
