Brazil's police arrest bus
hijacker in Rio
Brazilian police on Friday
arrested the suspect who
hijacked a bus full of
passengers in Rio de Janeiro
earlier of the day and
threatened to kill his ex-wife.
Andre Luiz Ribeiro da Silva, a
salesman, surrendered to police
10 hours after taking hostage
his ex-wife, Cristina Ribeiro,
36, and eight passengers on a
bus he hijacked at around 8 a.m.
During the protracted
negotiation, police managed to
secure the release of more than
20 other hostages.
Silva faces charges of false
imprisonment and coercion.
It was a happy ending as the
lives of the hostages were saved
and no one got hurt, said State
Police Commander Hudson de
Aguiar Miranda.
Silva and Ribeiro had been
married for 10 years, and have
three children. The couple
divorced months ago as the
salesman accused his wife of
adultery.
