US May Deport 30,000 Guatemalans
About 30,000 Guatemalans are in
imminent danger Tuesday of being
deported due to the tightening
of US laws, an immigrant
organization denounced in this
capital.
Rosa Posadas, director of the
Union of Guatemalan Immigrants (UGE),
warned of this possibility
during a meeting with the
Congress of the Republic s new
elected executive board.
According to the UGE director,
most arrived in that country due
to the internal armed conflict
in Guatemala, and after 10 or 15
years there, they are being
requested to attend hearings to
determine if they renew
permission.
According to official figures,
nearly 1.3 million Guatemalans
are living in United States, and
of them, at least 700,000 are
illegal.
US migratory authorities have
deported over 13,000 people in
just the first nine months of
this year, with an average of
1,500 persons monthly.
