Whale Shark Research
Costa Rican and US scientists
will study, starting in June and
through July 2007, the transit
of whale sharks, the largest
known fish, through the Costa
Rican Pacific.
The research is aimed at
establishing the migration
routes followed by these giants
of the sea, who average 10 tons
in weight and 15 meters (over 45
feet) in length.
The study is aimed at protecting
this endangered species, which
is protected by international
law but is hunted by the
hundreds, particularly in the
Philippines and Taiwan.
