UN Probes Guatemalan Human Rights
To visit communities affected by war and learn of the indigenous peoples´ situation are one of Thursday´s main priorities by UN Top Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour in Guatemala.

Other priorities include meeting here with representatives of the State´s three powers and members of humanitarian, indigenous organizations and from the society´s other sectors, and visiting the Rabinal municipality to learn from relatives of victims of massacres in Plan de Sanchez, Rio Negro and Chixoy.

On her first visit to Guatemala, the UN official will also tour dependencies of the Forensic Anthropology Foundation, which is carrying out a meritorious labor in searching and identifying those missing people during the clashes.

It is estimated than over 200,000 people have died or disappeared in the country´s 36 years of armed conflict, most of them due to the army´s repression.
