WORLD CUP SOCCER:
Costa Rica Falls to Catalonia
The
Costa Rican national team opened
its World Cup preparations with
a 2-0 loss to a Catalonia select
side on Wednesday, allowing a
goal in each half and making
little impact in the exhibition
game before a crowd of 8,155 at
Olympic Stadium.
Francisco Medina, who plays for
second-division Spanish team
Ciudad de Murcia, gave Catolonia
the lead in the eighth minute
and Roger Garcia added a penalty
kick in the 65th minute.
Costa Rica, which was without
injured defender Gilberto
Martinez, has World Cup warm up
games against Ukraine on May 28
and the Czech Republic on May
30.
The World Cup 2006 opener is on
June 9, when Costa Rica faces
host team Germany.
The morning of the game is a day
off for all public sector
employees in Costa Rica.
