Central America, WFP agree on strategies to cope with hurricanes
Representatives of the World Food Program (WFP) and the Central American nations agreed Tuesday in El Salvador on joint strategies to face the coming hurricane season, reports reaching here said.

WFP officials from all offices in the region would meet civil defense officials and regional organization officials to analyze the hurricane season, said local WFP representative Carlo Scarmella at a meeting in San Salvador, capital of El Salvador.

The representatives will then be tasked with tackling problems that need to be solved for swiftly distributing aid during the hurricane season, which begins in June 1.

Experts have said this year's hurricane season could be more violent than the 25-year average, but less severe than last year's.

The WFP is planning to set up a center which will store up resources needed to support hurricane victims and in any country in Central America.

The center will probably be in Soyapango, some six km east of San Salvador, and such centers have already been set up in Panama and Barbados.
