Int'l conference ends in Peru with promise to protect immigrants
An international conference on immigration ended here Wednesday with the signing of a declaration, aimed at strengthening protection of immigrants' human rights, the Peruvian foreign ministry said.

Twenty-three ministers from Latin American, African and Asian countries attended the two-day meeting -- the Special International Ministerial Conference for Developing Nations with International Migrant Flows.

However, they failed to address a decision taken by the United States on Tuesday to send 6,000 troops to its border to stem the flow of undocumented immigrants.

The officials agreed to adopt measures that would prevent all illegal or violent acts, racial discrimination and human trafficking, said the Declaration of Lima.

They also agreed that their countries would ask the nations that receive immigrants to implement measures, aimed at promoting tolerance and social inclusion of migrants and respect for cultural diversity.

The Peruvian foreign ministry said the declaration will be presented to a United Nations meeting on immigration in September.
