Deaths toll in Brazil's gang related violence rises to 133
Deaths bring the toll since Friday to 133, including 40 officers and guards, in Brazil's latest gang related riots that has sown fear in Sao Paulo, South America's largest metropolis.

Heavily armed police officers killed 33 suspected gang members in an overnight manhunt in the streets of Sao Paulo on Monday and early Tuesday. Afterwards, the violence seemed to abate.

The latest aggressive police response was fueled by bitterness among law enforcement officials that they had been targeted in the attacks.

Marco Antonio Desgualdo, a Sao Paulo state police official, said that the police's retaliation was carried out within the confines of the law. "But that doesn't mean we have to let them humiliate us," he said.

On Friday, jailed gang leaders launched uprisings that resulted in riots at 73 state prisons and violent attacks on about 250 police posts. In all, 133 people have been killed.

Miguel Juvencio Dos Santos, 54, a maintenance man at a commercial building in the financial district, admitted that the outbreaks had shaken him a little. "I pay more attention to what's happening around me, and I am avoiding crowded places, like malls and markets."

"I've lived in Sao Paulo since 1978, and I've never seen anything like this," Dos Santos added.
