Canadian Wanted By Costa Rican Authorities Nabbed
When Michael James Forrest walked out of his luxurious home in San Pablo de Heredia yesterday at noon for a jog he never imagined that he would end up in police custody.

The 64 year old man was detained by agents of the DIS-Interpol, that were on his trail for some time, and taken to the Juzgado Penal del Primer Circuito Judicial de San José who had ordered his capture on March 30 of 2004.

The Canadian who suffers from a heart condition and needs regular exercise covered with a baseball cap and sunglasses, not necessarily to hide his identity, as agents confirmed that the man in the photograph in their possession and the man coming out of the residence was one and the same.

With the help of the Fuerza Pública de Santo Domingo de Heredia, the DIS-Interpol agents detained the man some 100 metres from his home. Not carrying any documents on his person, the man identified himself to agents as James Forrest.

Forrest, married and a resident of Costa Rica, was wanted by the Fiscalía de Delitos Económicos, Corrupción y Tributarios de San José (Costa Rican authorities) for fraud involving some hundreds of millions of colones.

Costa Rican authorities fearing that Forrest may have left the country and returned to Canada to avoid prosecution had obtained the international arrest warrant.

However, Interpol agents received information that Forrest was still in Costa Rica and not in British Columbia as he had been expected, and along with agents of the DIS - the Costa Rican secret investigative agency - and the Fuerza Pública, they intercept Forrest.

Forrest is now in the hands of judicial authorities who will probably be denied bail and will have to wait out the investigation in preventive detention. Following the detention, police raid the Forrest home for evidence linking him to the charges.
