Canal Extension Centers Debate
The Panama government is
intensifying its diplomatic
offensive to obtain foreign
support for the expansion of the
Panama Canal. However,
Panamanians remain divided on
the wisdom of the extension.
Whether to expand the
inter-oceanic route at a cost of
5.25 billion dollars, to have
increased income and many more
jobs for the country, has
dominated the Panamanian stage
recently.
According to a survey by Dichter
Neira, 57.3 percent of
Panamanians support canal
expansion, 27.2 percent reject
it, and another 15.5 have not
made a decision.
While Panama's high-ranking
officials have successfully
presented the expansion plan
abroad, with the EU and US
showing interest, only
Panamanians will make the final
decision through a national
referendum, after the
Legislature and the Executive
have endorsed the proposal.
