Panama Hosts Anti-Torture Meeting
Panama will host a Central American conference beginning Tuesday, sponsored by specialized international organizations, to prevent torture and maltreatment of prisoners.

Juan Antonio Tejada, Panama´s General Attorney, told press the objectives of the weeklong meetings are to prepare Central American officials on the methodology of visits to detention centers as a way to prevent such suffering by detainees.

Besides delegates from Mexico, El Salvador, Colombia, the US, Paraguay, Denmark and Panama, representatives from the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, Association for Prevention of Torture, the OAS and the UN will offer their experience and support.

The conference, also supported by Spain and the Central American Board of Human Rights Attorneys, will additionally deal with identifying strategies and improving regional practices as well as projections to ratify the optional protocol against torture.
