Puma Terrorizes Heredia Residents
Though he is heard and some have seen it, the Bomberos (firefighters) and Cruz Roja (Red Cross) have not been able to capture it, the feline that is prowling the residential area known as Ave del paraíso en los Ángeles de San Rafael de Heredia.

The hunt for the Puma is on but the big cat is evading its captors and keeping residents terrorized. Residents say the big cat is close, evidenced by the prints left behind. Some residents say that the cat is probably more scared than the residents and the trappers.

The Puma has been described by those who have seen a glimpse of it as completely black with yellow eyes. So far there have been no reports of any attacks by the big cat.

The Puma is a cat of many names, also known as the Cougar, Panther or Mountain Lion. In general the size and coloration of the cat varies greatly across its range, which stretches from the south west of Canada down the western states of North America and throughout most western parts of the South American continent.

In the north of its range and in higher mountainous regions the pumas coat is generally longer to provide additional protection against the extremes in temperature - the colour of the fur varies from slate grey, through yellow buff to light reddish brown. In appearance the puma has a small, broad head with small rounded ears, a powerful body with long hind legs and tail, which is tipped with black.

The Costa Rican Puma (Puma concolor costaricensis) is an endangered feline. This Puma subspecies usually hunts at night and may sometimes travel long distances. Its average litter size is 3 cubs. This Puma is tan colored and is unspotted. The Puma ranks 2nd largest in the Costa Rican cat family. The Puma is found in various places and habitats. This Puma is amazingly fast, and can maneuver quite easily and skillfully.

Attacks on humans are rare, but do occur — especially as humans encroach on wildlands and impact the availability of the puma's traditional prey.
