Costa Ricas new president, Oscar Arias, who took office on May 8th, has already shown his ability to build consensus, thereby improving the prospects for good governability conditions.

Public Employees Were Off the Job For the Game
An estimated 34.000 of the 170.000 public sector employees took the time off the job yesterday to watch the opening of the 2006 World Cup. The government gave the employees time off between 7:00am and 1:00pm.

Blaze Started in Appliance Storeroom
The blaze that threatened tragedy and devoured the top two floors of a building in downtown San José Thursday night started in an appliance storeroom, officials say. The Styfani-Infilang building located on Calle 4 and Avenida Central, across from the Banco Central de Costa Rica, became the scene of the biggest fire for this year when flames and smoke poured from the building around 5:30pm.

Gasoline Prices Fueled Inflation
The hikes in the prices of fuels and electricity accelerated inflation in May.


17,000 Foreigners Rejected
During the first five months this year, Costa Rican law enforcement agencies prevented 17,071 aliens from illegally entering the country.

Government Vehicles On The Blink
Of the 5.000 vehicles registered to the Poder Ejecutivo, one half of them do not have the required "revisión tecnica" - the annual vehicular inspection - and there is no doubt that many of them are on the streets daily.
