Pacheco To Be Nominated For Nobel Prize
The position of not allowing the exploitation of oil in Costa Rican waters may see former president, Abel Pacheco de la Espriella, awarded the Nobel Peace prize, that could make him the second Costa Rican to receive the prize. The first was current president Oscar Arias.

That is the information that was given out by the Oilwatch de Costa Rica organization that says Pacheco's name is on the list with at least two others candidates, whose identity was not disclosed, and kept secret.

The naming comes at a complicated time, while the world is looking at Costa Rica as a "green" or ecological responsible country, the new government of Arias is thinking of eliminating the moratorium placed by the Pacheco administration, that would allow oil exploration off the Costa Rican coasts.

"This is a great support, for the eyes of the world will make it difficult for Nobel winner Arias to assume a political position against his declarations for peace for nature. Arias could reconsider eliminating the moratorium, but would be contradictory to the position he shared in the past," said Mauricio Álvarez, of Oilwatch.

The possibility of oil exploration surfaced last week when a group from Petro-Bras of Brazil was in Costa Rica. Arias said that he was open to the possibility to allow oil exploration in Limón. The Brazilians want to do want the United States Harken Energy wanted to do several years back.

The moratorium placed by the Pacheco administration has led to a series of international charges by Harken, a case that is still ongoing and established a constitutional chapter that would eliminate the section of the Ley de Hidrocarbunos that permits oil exploration of natural surroundings.

Former president Pacheco did not comment on the possibility of being awarded the Nobel prize, but did say that he stands firmly against the exploration of the Atlantic coast and to continue the "war in search of fossil fuels will mean the death of the beautiful home the Lord has confided us with."
