Costa Rica Unions Against The
TLC (CAFTA)
Costa Rican unions asserted they
will protest next Wednesday
against the free trade agreement
with the US because it will
affect their work rights.
In a news conference on
Thursday, Association of Public
Employees Secretary Albino
Vargas said the Central American
Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)
means to retrogress in
breastfeeding, health and
holidays.
Vargas criticized the
Constitutional Court for turning
down various clauses granting
benefits to public sector
officials because they say they
affect the principle of equity
in respect to the rest of
workers.
He said that court was violating
the Constitution to adjust to
the CAFTA, and made it clear the
constitutional article 60
regulates employers and workers
can freely form unions only to
obtain and preserve economic,
social and professional
benefits.
