Witnesses Implicate Husband in
Wife's Murder
The case against Luis Fernando
Burgos, accused of murdering his
wife, is growing daily as
investigators dig deep into the
events of the crime and the
movement of Burgos as he tried
to cover it up.
Yesterday, officials of the
Unidad de Apoyo del Ministerio
Público, along with agents of
the Organismo de Investigación
Judicial (OIJ) and a medical
forensic team combed the area
where the body of Maureen
Hidalgo was found.
Investigators, using canine
support, are looking mainly for
a sheet that was used to cover
the body as she was thrown onto
the side of the road near Rido
Grande in Atenas. Authorities
are now completely convinced
that they have their man, but
are looking for one or more
accomplices.
Tuesday as public defender was
suspended for three months after
she told investigators that she
had received a call from Burgos
for her assistance in disposing
of Maureen. The public defender
was Burgos' ex-girlfriend and
revealed the phone call while
being interviewed.
Yesterday, Henry Vega, a laywer
for the Hidalgo family, said
that during the last couple of
days the Fiscalía (prosecutor's
office) received a number of
phone calls with information,
including possible witnesses
that have been key to the
investigation. Vega added that
the Fiscalía is keeping the
identity of the witness secret
so as not to impede their
investigation.
Burgos is currently being held
in preventive detention. The man
will spend the next six months
in a jail cell at the Hatillo
police station, a move to
protect his life if he is sent
to the San Sebastían jail, while
investigators continue their
investigation.
