Thumbs Up For Creation of
Tourist Police Force
The board of directors of the
Instituto Costarricense de
Turismo (ICT) - Costa Rican
tourism board - gave the thumbs
up on an agreement with the
Ministerio de Seguridad Pública
(MSP)to form a "tourist police
force".
The deal calls for a group of
officers of the MSP to receive
special uniforms, transportation
and English language classes by
the ICT but will remain to be
paid by the MSP.
The announcement was made
yesterday at the Club Unión in
downtown San José.
Those present listened to a
number of different tourist
chambers around the country and
the words of the Public Security
minister about the need for
added security in tourist areas,
for example like Playa Jacó.
The Minister did not give
details on how many officers
will be assigned to the tourist
police force nor were details of
the financial investment by the
ICT were given, other than the
ICT will have the ability to
suggest locations where the
special police force might be
needed most.
The agreement will be officially
signed on July 25, the day of
the Anexión del Partido de
Nicoya.
Costa Rica has become one of the
countries where tourists are
frequently target of assaults.

Officers of the Fuerza Pública
wil receive special training,
including English language
classes, and will form part of
the "tourist police force" to
combat the rising incidents of
assaults on tourists.
