Chile asks Washington to extradite former army officer
The Chilean Supreme Court said on Wednesday that it has asked the United States to extradite former Chilean army major Armando Fernandez Larios who was suspected of killings and human rights violations.

The judge said there was "an illicit association" between Fernandez Larios and members of the "Dignidad," a colony that was established in 1961 by former German Nazi officer Paul Schaefer.

During the rule of Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s and 1980s, many of his opponents were believed to have been jailed or to have disappeared inside the colony, located in a Chilean mountainous region.

Fernandez Larios fled to the United States in 1987 and admitted to the U.S. government that he had been involved in the 1976 assassination of former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier.

Chile and the United States do not have an extradition treaty.
