Virgen del Mar Tradition in Puntarenas
While many where glued to their television sets for the World Cup finals, just as many faithful were on the water in Puntarenas observing the tradition of "Virgen del Mar".

The party began with the inauguration of the Barrio el Carman lighthouse which was donated by Incop. The lighthouse, an important illumination for the Golfo de Nicoya, had not been working for several years. Both president Oscar Arias and the Ministro de Turismo were on hand to cut the ribbon.

The president also affirmed his commitment to repair the Capitanía de Puerto, an important tourist landmark, that requires a ¢75 million colones investment.

The religious event, organized by the tourist board, included the president visiting the Catedeal de Puntarenas, where the local bishop, monseñor Oscar Fernández, and the archbishop of San José, monseñor Hugo Barrantes, gave Eucharist to the Virgen de El Carmen, who image was placed at the foot of a crucified Jesus surrounded by flags from various countries.

Barrantes took the opportunity to tell publicly president Arias to fix the roads between San José and Caldera so that Josefinos (residents of San José) can visit the port area.

The tradition of Virgen del Mar has been going on for 93 years as local fishermen take the image out to sea. The strong waves and high seal level didn't stop the tradition this year, being carried on the towboat "Don Beto", followed by some other 30 boats, who were giving thanks to the Virgen for her protection during the past year and asking for protection for the year to come.
