UK
supports Brazil's bid for UN
Security Council membership
British Foreign Secretary
Margaret Beckett said Monday
that Britain supports Brazil's
bid for UN Security Council
membership.
She told reporters in Sao Paulo
that the inclusion of Brazil in
the UN Security Council will
further increase the country's
responsibility for the political
stabilization in Latin America.
Beckett said: "The current
definition of permanent members
of the (UN) Security Council is
based on World War Two
alliances."
"If we lack the courage to
realize the necessary reforms
now, it will be very difficult
for the UN to play its role in
the world," she said.
She described Brazil as an
important regional player in
boosting regional stability as
part of the Southern Common
Market (Mercosur) and the South
American Community of Nations.
During her visit to Brazil,
Beckett was scheduled to discuss
with Brazilian officials the
Doha Round of World Trade
Organization talks and meet her
Brazilian counterpart, Celso
Amorim.
Brazil and Britain have an
increasingly close relationship
thanks in part to a trade
agreement signed in 2003. Trade
between the two countries
reached 3.96 billion U.S.
dollars in 2005.
