Salvadorian Electoral
Violence
Members of Salvadorian political
parties denounced Sunday the
violence sparked by opposing
sides in the March 12, 2006
legislative and municipal
electoral campaign.
According to these activists,
the campaign has been
characterized by incidents since
the legislative debate prior to
the beginning of the electoral
poll last Wednesday.
Members from the Partido de
Conciliacion Nacional (PDC) and
Alianza Republicana Nacionalista
(ARENA) were mutually accused of
destroying propaganda and
beating some followers.
ARENA activists and followers of
leftist Farabundo Marti Front
for National Liberation (FMLN)
had a confrontation when the
latter was attempting to verify
the former had marked one of its
billboards, and some 25 FMLN
supporters were attacked by
ARENA representatives when
hanging posters on the streets.
With this situation, members of
the parliament pleaded for
tranquility so the elections can
take place without incident.
In the March 12 elections, about
3.8 million Salvadorians will
elect 84 deputies to the
Congress, 20 to the Central
American Parliament and 262 to
municipal councils.
According to experts, voting
arrangements will cost some
$12.8 million and be supervised
by the Organization of American
States (OAS).
