Guatemala To Take Costa Rica
To Court Over Ice Cream
Following a stalemate in
reaching an agreement, the
government of Guatemala has
decided to take Costa Rica to a
Central American tribunal to
settle the dispute, that for
years has barred the entry of
Helados Sarita to Costa Rica.
Enrique Lacs, vice-minister of
Economy in Guatemala, said that
his government is getting ready
to present their case to the
tribunal and expects an answer
within 90 days of starting.
Guatemala's position is that is
has complied will the required
procedures based on the Tratado
de Integración Centroamericana
to export the ice cream to Costa
Rica, though Costa Rica still
refuses the product.
Costa Rica mantains that Sarita
uses powedered milk which is not
of Guatemalan origin, which
contravenes the norms of the
agreement and can bar the entry
of the product. The last time
Sarita products were sold in
Costa Rica was two years ago.
Sarita has been producing ice
cream products since 1948 in
Guatemala by a husband and wife
couple who were up early each
morning to prepare and sell
their products to the local
neighbourhood. Motivated by the
success of their ice cream, the
couple began to invest in
equipment and quickly grew to
satisfy a demand for their brand
of ice cream.
