6 Cuban officials sentenced
to jail for embezzlement
Six officials have been
sentenced in the eastern Cuban
province of Holguinto to prison
terms ranging from six to 20
years for embezzlement, reported
Cuban daily Juventud Rebelde
Friday.
The six former directors of the
state-owned Communal Services
Company were accused of
pocketing more than half of the
resources earmarked for buying
plants for Holguin city in a
fraud that lasted from January
2001 to the end of September
2003.
The company said it had spent
around 7.6 million Cuban pesos
(304,000 U.S. dollars) on buying
nearly 1.6 million plants.
But only around 270,000 plants
or 17 percent of the totally
bought have been actually
planted and they are only worth
around 1.3 million pesos (52,000
dollars).
