Blockade Panama Border
The transport of freight between
Costa Rica and Panama has come
to a stand still as some 700
truckers have paralyzed movement
at the Costa Rica - Panama
border.
The main complaint is a new
regulation by the Ministerio de
Hacienda (Revenue Ministry) that
imposes an electronic marchamo
costing us$40.
The president of the Cámara
Nacional del Transporte de Carga
(Canatraca) de Panamá - truckers
association - Manuel Mora, is
promoting a strike in the
provinces of Chiriquí. "Costa
Rica wants us$70 for hauling a
load between Paso Canoas (Panama
border) and San José and us$140
for travel between Paso Canoas
and Peñas Blancas (Nicaraguan
border)", said Mora, who added
that the amounts are in
violation of an agreement
established in 2001.
Mora added that traffic at the
border is only affecting cargo
shipments and not buses and
passenger vehicles and will
continue to do so until the
government eliminates the
increases.
The association president says
that he believes that the
Panamanian government may have
to step in to help solve the
problem.
Meanwhile the blockade is
causing a lot of money is being
lost at both sides of the
border.
