Guatemala Teachers Boo
Privatization
Despite icy temperatures, over
1,000 Guatemalan teachers
remained until Wednesday morning
in front of the Congressional
headquarters to demand the
abdication of Education Minister
Maria del Carmen Aceña.
Nationwide educators moved to
the capital to snub the Aceña-boosted
neoliberal reforms, which entail
gradual privatization of public
education through the transfer
of several obligations of the
State to communities and
companies.
The Education minister was
questioned Tuesday for over
eight hours at the Parliament on
her controversial project, the
use of the sector´s budget and
the lack of teachers.
The questioning will be extended
until February 21, when the
National Teaching Assembly
called its members for a new day
of protest.
