Transnational Cuts Power,
Nicaraguans Irate
Consumers from Leon and Granada
in Nicaragua mobilized Monday to
urge Spanish Power company Union
Fenosa to leave the country
because of poor service to the
population.
The protests at the Nicaraguan
Energy Institute (INE) – the
national regulatory entity --
were over electricity power
outages that have been affecting
the people for several months,
while the bills still arrive
every month, and are even
“altered.”
The forceful demonstrators urged
INE Director David Castillo to
intervene in this matter.
Maria Rosario Baltodano, of
Grenada Consumers´ Association,
said that consumers were “fed
up” and that things will only
get better when the service
return to state control.
Ruth Selma Herrera, from the
National Network for Consumer
Defense, called on the people
not to pay any bill until power
cuts cease.
Meanwhile, Union Fenosa blames
the situation to breakdowns at
several generator plants.
