Majority of Ticos Don't Trust
Their Politicians, Poll Shows
A poll taken by the Idespo-Universidad
Nacional (UNA) says that Costa
Ricans have lost faith in their
politicians. The poll of 800
people reveals that 68% of Ticos
don't trust their politicians
and believe there is more
corruption and he ring of
politicians and how they manage
the public purse is
deteriorating democracy in the
country.
The poll was presented by Irma
Sandoval, director of Idespo.
The investigation also reveals
that many Ticos believe that the
social inequality and the
sensation of insecurity with the
increase in crime and
delinquency in general is a
fault of their politicians.
The failure of politicians to
keep their promises is the major
reason that Costa Ricans are
unsatisfied with their
politicians and the democratic
system in Costa Rica, said
Sandoval during her presentation
of the poll.
The investigation showed that
46% of the Ticos polled believe
there has been no bettering of
life in Costa Rica, while 12%
feel that the quality of life
has decreased, that the rich are
richer and that poverty
continues to rise.
An interesting revelation by the
poll is that while the
confidence in politicians
declines, Costa Ricans are
placing more faith in their
institutions, like the news
media that earned a 47% favour,
while state banks scored 48% and
the Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE), yes, the
state monopoly on
telecommunications and
electricity, scored a 45.5%.
The poll also reveals that many
Costa Ricans believe that the
government should invest more in
education, roads infrastructure
and health.
