Government Announces Holiday
Closings
The holiday season is upon us
and so are holiday hours and
closings.
The central government announced
the closings for the end of the
year, saying it will be on
vacation from Friday 22 December
06 to Tuesday 02 January 2007.
Those dates only apply to the
central government, as state
agencies and autonomous
institutions like the Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE), the Instituto Nacional de
Seguros (INS) and the Instituto
Costarricense de Turimso (ICT),
for instance, will be setting
their own hours.
Banks, both private and state,
have yet to announce their
holiday closings.
The legal (paid) holidays for
private sector employees is
December 25 and January 1.
However, many businesses and
industires, save retailers, will
be be closing on the 22nd and
re-opening on the 2nd, similar
to the central government
employee schedule.
This year the holidayers have to
find other ways to spend their
time off as the Zapote annual
fair was cancelled and there
will be no "carneval" on the
27th, as has been a tradition
for many years. The only
traditional year end activity
that remains is the "tope" or as
it being renamed this year, "el
dial del caballista" on the
26th, when thousands flock to
downtown to see the annual
parade of horses.
