Panama Lobbies to Enhance Canal
The government of Panama is
lobbying political circles to
achieve support for the Canal
enhancement project.
As part of the drive President
Martin Torrijos met with the
leaders of the parties Liberal
Nacional, Solidaridad,
Panamenista and Movimiento
Liberal Republicano Nacionalista
(MOLINERA).
MOLINERA party calls for further
talks with ex Presidents
Guillermo Endara and Jorge
Illueca, who back technical
objections by Canal ex
Administrator Fernando Manfredo
and a team of experts.
The polls indicate majority
support for the 5.2 billion
dollar modernization and
enlargement with a third lock
but an Oct 22 referendum will
have the final word.
Partido Cambio Democratico
leader Ricardo Martinelli
supports the referendum but
talks of increasing rejection to
the project.
