Kidnappings Worry Honduran
President
President Manuel Zelaya voiced
concern over the wave of
kidnappings Thursday, while the
opposition kept Honduran
security policy under fire
concerning 18 abductions this
year.
Zelaya said he was concerned
that kidnappings would
proliferate in Honduras, already
one of the most violent
countries in the area, because
of organized crime; although he
claimed the police solve 90
percent of cases.
The latest case involves the
14-year-old daughter of the
president of soccer referees and
occurred Sunday.
Honduras reported 47 kidnappings
in 2000. The numbers declined
with ex President Ricardo Maduro
(2002-2006), whose son was
kidnapped and murdered five
years earlier.
Official statistics report five
for the 2002-2003 period in
Honduras, but the Attorney
General s Office claims 31.
