Nicaraguan Congress Tackles
Energy Crisis
Nicaragua's National Assembly
convened an extraordinary
session to address the severe
domestic energy deficit that
could lead to a social
explosion.
Most of the 90-member Congress
oppose President Enrique Bolanos
proposal to cover the 9.6
million dollar debt of Spanish
Union electricity company Fenosa,
primary cause of the shortfall.
The session is expected to be
hot since the congress people
reportedly smell something fishy
in the deal.
Partido Constitucionalista
maintains it is to benefit
Alianza Liberal Nicaragüense
candidate Eduardo Montealegre,
an ex banker, oil businessman
and shareholder of the Tipitapa
Power plant.
The FSLN, Sandinista National
Liberation Front, also calls the
payment a blunder the people
will have to redress later and
called to work on alternative
energy sources and raise oil
company taxes.
