Colombia imposes measures
against gasoline trafficking
Colombia has taken measures to
prevent the smuggling of
gasoline from Venezuela,
following an attack which
destroyed 85 tanker trucks in
the town of Maicao on the
Venezuelan border, the Colombian
Energy and Mines Ministry said
in a statement on Wednesday.
"We have to intervene and set up
roadblocks to ensure there would
be no smuggling. We will ask the
Customs police to help us on the
border, (and) to make sure there
is no inappropriate activity,"
Energy Minister Hernan Martinez
told media.
He said Colombia was also
expecting Venezuelan authorities
to help as well.
Colombian guerillas on Monday
destroyed 85 tanker trucks,
which belonged to a Venezuelan
cooperative, using gas cylinders
as bombs. The loss is estimated
at 4.2 million U.S. dollars.
The Revolutionary Armed Forces
of Colombia claimed
responsibility for the attack,
saying they intended to cut off
paramilitaries' funding sources,
because these paramilitaries
"are responsible for the worst
atrocities in the La Guajira
region."
