¢597 Colones For A Litre of Super?
Better fill your tank today, because at the stroke of midnight, the eight gasoline price increase takes effect, brining the price of a litre of super to ¢597 colones (us$1.16) the highest in the region.

If you fill up today, the same litre of super gasoline will cost you ¢575 colones (us$1.12), a price that set the record books last time around.

Regular will jump from today's price of ¢550 (us$1.07) to ¢573 (us$1.11) colones per litre and diesel will jump slightly from the current ¢380 (us$.737) to ¢383 colones (us$.743 per litre.

What the increase means is that it will cost ¢990 (us$1.92) more to fill a 45 litre tank with super.

LPG gas for vehicles will also increase as well as propane gas used for cooking in many Costa Rican homes with gas stoves. The price of LPG will go from the current ¢288 to ¢312 colones per litre and propane will cost ¢8.149 colones for a 21.5 litre tank and ¢13.000 colones for a 34.4 litre tank.

Tomorrow's prices will set a new record. And experts predict things to get worse as the international situation is not getting any better. The price of a barrel of crude oil set by OPEC hit a new record this week at us$72.12, more than a dollar higher than the week earlier.

The Middle East crisis is a contributing factor to the high prices, as Israel continues to pound Lebanon and the uncertainty of Iran and its policy on atomic weapons. Add to that the news from British Petroleum (BP) of shutting down a pipeline in Alaska due to corrosion. BP says it will use its total financial and manpower resources to replace a 16 mile section of the pipeline over the next couple of months.

In terms of dollars and gallons, the price of a US gallon of super gasoline will cost tomorrow us$4.38, regular us$4.20 and diesel us$2.79.

And if anyone is interested, the price for a Canadian gallon will be us$5.26, regular us$5.08 and diesel us$3.37 and converted to Canadian dollars, the prices are ca$5.89, cs$5.69 and ca$3.77, respectively.
