Dominican National Police fire
61 officers for using illegal
drugs
The Dominican Republic's
National Police have fired 61
officers for using illegal drugs
after a random drug test,
according to news from Santo
Domingo, capital of this
Caribbean country, on Monday.
The news reports quoted
Dominican government officials
as saying that 16 of the 61
sacked officers had been tested
positive for cocaine.
The test, following public
allegations that a large number
of police officers had been
involved in drug trafficking,
covered 3,000 of all the 32,000
National Police officers. It was
regarded as the latest move of
the government's anti-crime
offensive launched last week.
The officials did not say if
those officers would be tried
for using illegal drugs.
