Train
Accident Kills Woman
Ana López Centeno did not hear
the train whistle and in an
instant became the first
fatality since the train began
operations last October. The
forty-five year old woman was
run over by the train in front
of her place of work, at Cococo
computer store in La Sabana.
According to witnesses, the
woman attempted to cross the
tracks in front of the train and
was caught under the weight of
the locomotive.
No one say what really happened.
Eye witnesses only saw the woman
walking along the side of the
tracks calmly when all of a
sudden she was dragged some 13
metres from where she was last
seen standing.
López, a mother of seven
children, who lived in Pavas,
worked at the Cococo for the
last seven years and was aware
of the train as it passed in
front of her place of work each
morning and afternoon.
According to the train engineer,
the train was on route to San
Rafael de Alajuela with a load
of soya from Puntarenas.
Authorities want to make clear
that the accident was not caused
by the "tren urbano" - commuter
train.
"The accident is regrettable,
however, people continue to
ignore and respect the train
signals and dont understand that
a train cannot stop like a car",
said Miguel Carabaguíaz,
president of Incofer.
